Cultural frenzy reigned in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, as Style.Uz Art Week 2011 was in full swing on October 23-28, 2011. The 6 days offered a diverse and colorful menu of fashion shows, exhibitions, competitions, workshops and concerts by prominent singers, thereby adding another exciting and memorable page to the cultural chronicles of Uzbekistan. A brainchild of Gulnara Karimova, Art Week has been given the goal of contributing to international cultural exchange and supporting the creative endeavors of young talents.

As many as 110 diverse events have been held on October 17-29 as part of Style.Uz Art Week 2011, Golden Guepard Tashkent International Cinema Forum, the 2nd International Theatre Festival “Theatre.Uz” and the 6th Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art, a project quartet overseen by the Fund Forum and its partners. Over 60,000 people attended the events.

Style.Uz Art Week 2011 culminated in a charity concert by Italian pop star Eros Ramazzotti. Held on October 28, the singer’s 48th birthday, the concert contributed to pink action held as part of Art Week, with the proceeds slated to go toward supporting women living with breast cancer, purchasing costly medications and financing surgeries in Uzbekistan and abroad. Part of the tickets to the concert was distributed among women diagnosed with the disease and doctors involved in free medical checkups organized regularly across the country.

The 6th Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art to be held as part of Style.Uz Art Week 2011 will kick off on October 23 at p.m. The 9 exhibitions of contemporary art that make up the Biennale will feature photos, pictures and installations by Uzbek and international artists from Afghanistan, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the UAE, the USA and Uzbekistan. Organized by the Fund Forum, the Academy of Arts and the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Uzbekistan, the Biennale will also include a roundtable titled “Crisis or Transformation of Multiculturalism: the Biennale Space”.

Vladimir Spivakov, a prominent Russian conductor, has arrived to Tashkent by the invitation of the Fund Forum. Today, the 5th October Tashkent’s Turkiston Palace will host a concert by the CIS Youth Symphonic Orchestra under the baton of Vladimir Spivakov.

The Central House of Artists in Moscow is housing an exhibition of works by prominent watercolor artist Klavdia Sarafanova-Legat (1911-1989). Dedicated to Uzbekistan, the art show is titled “Samarkand. Bukhara. Khiva. Cities and People” and will run through October 2. The exhibition has been organized by the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Russia, the Fund Forum, Alliance Art Gallery and the International Confederation of Artist Unions.

On October 24, world-famous Italian composer and conductor Ennio Morricone will take the stage at the Palace of International Forums in a joint concert with the National Symphonic Orchestra of Uzbekistan on the first day of Style.Uz Art Week. Up to 50% of tickets to the concert will be distributed among talented young people in Uzbekistan.

The Youth Creativity Palace welcomes the public to attend “The World in the Eyes of the Youth”, an exhibition of works by young artists who present their vision of a world without war and violence. The art show has been organized by the Fund Forum, the Women’s Council, Kelajak ovozi YIC and the UN Office in Uzbekistan.

The Fund Forum, the Womens Council, Kelajak ovozi (Voice of the future) YIC, Special Olympics Uzbekistan, UNESCO, the UN Information Center, UN Women, Civil Initiatives Support Center (CISC), the National Association of NGOs of Uzbekistan, the Committee of Women and Uzbekistan Football Federation have launched a series of events commemorating the International Day of Peace marked worldwide on September 21. The Peace Bell was rung in Tashkent`s Bobur Park in what was a call for non-violence and cease-fire as well as a commitment to the ideals of friendship and concord.

A presentation of the book “Fund Forum presents Uzbekistan” and a photo exhibition took place as part of a reception commemorating Uzbekistan’s 20th independence anniversary in Vienna, Austria. Organized by the Uzbek Embassy in Austria, the event drew over 200 people who expressed their admiration for Uzbekistan, with many saying the book and the photos vividly reflected its ancient culture and history.

A reception commemorating the 20th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence in London included a presentation of the album “Fund Forum presents Uzbekistan” along with a showcase of photos based on the album. Organized by the Embassy of Uzbekistan in London, the event was attended by over 200 people, including members of British royalty, representatives of the Parliament, Foreign Office, the business community, media, officials of diplomatic missions as well as members of the British-Uzbek Society.

On September 17, Chaoyang Park in Beijing played host to an international charitable fair, Love Knows No Borders, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China with assistance from diplomatic missions of various countries and companies in China. The Uzbek pavilion mounted by the Uzbek Embassy in China with support from the Fund Forum drew a large number of people attending the major fair. The proceeds from the fair will go toward reconstructing low-income villages of national minorities in mountainous areas in Yunnan province.

On September 16, the Center of National Arts in Tashkent hosted Azerbaijan Day organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Tashkent and the Fund Forum as a run-up to Azerbaijan’s Independence Day to be celebrated on October 18. The artistic and thematic exhibitions held as part of the event enabled those gathered to get a taste of the country’s rich culture and history.

The University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing on September 15 hosted the second International Culture Festival, with the Fund Forum doing a presentation of Uzbek culture. The organizers gave the festival the goal of creating a platform for a dialog among various cultures and broadening UIBE students’ overall knowledge.

GULI label showed its Spring-Summer 2012 Collection as part of New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The show, which turned out the most talked-about event of New York Fashion Week, took place according to the schedule of the Fashion Week on September 15, 2011 at 12 a.m. following a joint communiqué issued by GULI Collections team and IMG WORLDWIDE, INC. The runway show took place at Cipriani Restaurant, which has hosted fashion showcases by big-name designers such as Mark Jacobs.
