British painter Annya Sand to show at Style.Uz Art Week 2012

Famous British abstract painter Annya Sand will present her artworks in Tashkent as part of Style.Uz Art Week 2012. The 17 paintings created by Sand from 2007 to 2011 will go on display at the Gallery of Fine Art. Scheduled for October 4-9, the Art Week will host prominent and up-and-coming artists while giving them an opportunity to strut their stuff, swap experience and draw inspiration for new artistic heights.

Titled “Abstract Thinking”, the solo show in Tashkent will showcase seventeen paintings, which Sand created from 2007 to 2011, at Tashkent’s Gallery of Fine Art. The British artist’s works previously went on display at the 6th Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art held as part of last year’s Art Week in Tashkent.

Sand’s upcoming first-ever trip to Uzbekistan will have exploratory purposes as well. Prior to the opening ceremony for her Tashkent show, the artist is planning to travel to Samarkand to familiarize herself with the traditional ornaments incorporated into the city’s architectural landmarks. Afterwards, Sand is planning to dedicate a series of works to Central Asian, particularly Samarkand’s, patterns and ornaments.

Sand is primarily an abstract artist, although her creations do not fit in particular boundaries. Rather, they are more intuitive. A subtle use of an earthy palette combined with flashes of more intense colors have become her signature in painting.

Among the other major art projects offered by this year’s Art Week is the 6th Tashkent International Photo Biennale, which is set to showcase more than 1,500 creations by over 200 artists from 35 countries. The Photo Biennale will take place on October 4-9 in Tashkent and Samarkand.

In addition, Style.Uz 2012 will include art shows by prominent artist Oganes Tatevosyan and French artist Tran Trong Wu, special exhibition “Generations Pass, Traditions Remain”, photo exhibition “Japan: Mysterious Fujiyama” and international exhibition of contemporary art “Genealogy – Tree of Memory” among others.
